The area of the city of Friedland borders in the north on the city of Beeskow, in the east on the district of Schlaubetal, in the south on the district of Lieberose/Oberspreewald and in the west on the community of Tauche. About 20,000 years ago, the meltwater streams of the Vistula Ice Age shaped a unique landscape structure around Friedland. A varied fringe of pine, beech and sessile oak forests, criss-crossed by alder quarries, deep gorges with numerous forest lakes and wet meadows along the Oelse and Schlaube rivers characterize the Friedland corridors. Since December 1995, large parts of the municipal area have belonged to the Schlaubetal Nature Park. Around 750 people live in the actual urban area. This made Friedland one of the smallest towns in Brandenburg before the incorporation of 15 smaller communities, and it is currently the smallest independent community in the state. Today's urban area is identical to the Friedland district (Lower Lusatia) that existed from 1992 to 2003.
